What Does A Course in Miracles Actually Teach?

After fifteen years of study, I can tell you that A Course in Miracles is the most demanding and most liberating spiritual text I have ever encountered. Most people who pick it up put it down within a week. The language is dense, the concepts are radical, and the ego — which the Course spends 1,200 pages systematically dismantling — fights back hard.

The Central Teaching: Nothing Unreal Exists

The Course begins with one of the most startling statements in all of spiritual literature: 'Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.' Most people read that and move on without fully absorbing what it means.

What it means is this: the world you see with your physical eyes is not the real world. It is a projection of the ego — a thought system built on fear, separation, and the belief that you are a body living in a hostile universe. This projected world is not real in the ultimate sense. It cannot be threatened because it is not truly there. And the Real — which is Love, Spirit, God, Christ — cannot be threatened because it is eternal, unchangeable, and everywhere.

Why This Changes Everything

If the world is a projection of the ego's fear, then healing the world begins not with action in the world but with healing the mind that is projecting it. This is the radical reversal the Course demands. We are not here to fix the world. We are here to remember that we are not what we think we are.

I spent years resisting this. After Mary Jo passed, I wanted the world to be real — I wanted her death to be real, her absence to be real, my grief to be real. The Course did not ask me to deny any of that. It asked me to look more deeply at what is real underneath all of it. And slowly, painfully, beautifully — I began to see.

"Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God."
