Is Time Real? What Non-Duality Teaches Us

One of the first manuscripts I wrote is called Time Is Collapsing. People often ask me what I mean by that title. The answer goes to the heart of everything I have learned about the nature of reality — and it begins with a question most of us have never seriously asked: Is time real?

The Illusion of Linear Time

We experience time as a river moving in one direction — past to future, birth to death. This feels so obvious, so undeniable, that questioning it seems absurd. But quantum physics, non-dual philosophy, and the deepest teachings of A Course in Miracles all converge on the same radical conclusion: linear time is a construct of the perceiving mind, not a feature of ultimate reality.

The Course teaches that the entire history of the world — every moment of past, present, and future — has already happened and is already over. What we experience as the present moment is a kind of playback, a review process in which the mind is being given the opportunity to choose again. To choose Love instead of fear. To choose remembrance instead of forgetting.

What This Means for Grief and Loss

When Mary Jo died, I experienced time as a knife. Every second that passed was another second further from the last moment I saw her alive. Linear time felt like the cruelest invention in the universe.

But non-duality taught me something different. If time is not the river I thought it was — if all moments exist simultaneously in a kind of eternal now — then Mary Jo's life is not receding into the past. It is present. She is present. Not in the sentimental sense of 'she lives on in my heart,' but in the literal metaphysical sense that consciousness is not bound by linear time and physical death is not what we think it is.

This is not wishful thinking. This is where logic, physics, and spiritual revelation all point — if you are willing to follow them.

"Time is collapsing. The past and future are converging into a single eternal present. And in that present, Love is all there is."
